In the sleepy cul-de-sacs of postwar suburbia, where lawn sprinklers ticked and station wagons gleamed, something unnatural sprouted in the Victory Gardens. Born of Cold War radiation and reckless fertilizer science, the mutated giant killer tomatoes rolled in on rubbery vines, their glossy skins gleaming like chrome hubcaps under the sun. Housewives screamed as they burst through picket fences, oozing acidic pulp and emitting a low, menacing gurgle. The PTA was powerless. It was terror in Technicolor—America’s produce turned predator.
